Valencia Smash! T20 2019 – How it Happened

What an incredible Valencia Smash! tournament it was. Two home sides from Levante CC and two from the south-east of England, Hoboes CC of Essex and Bidborough CC of Kent, offering a real test to the local boys who are also ECCL champions for 2019 at the T20 format.

Over the first two days we saw all teams play each other once, with the final day offering a third place play off and final before an evening of presentations, Tapas, Paella and a good few beers.

A warm and sunny Day one was so eventful and really set the tone for the whole occasion. With the two visiting sides playing the first game of the day, no side had any advantage in respect of experience on the artificial wicket. Both sides were a little delicate from the night before but this didn’t stop the sides smashing nearly 500 runs between them with Bidborough CC posting an enormous 278 for 4 from their 20 overs with Dan Page hammering 140 in 55 balls. Hoboes CC finished their innings with a more than respectable 218 for 6 but the Kent outfit took the points in the first match by 60 runs.

Match 2 was Levante Thunder, a side comprising of club members from both Levante CC and their friends at Barcelona International, against Hoboes CC. Winning the toss Hoboes CC chose to bat and put them straight to the sword with an impressive 241 for just 2 wickets with Andrew Kennedy on 82 and Darren Eckford on 71, both not out. The Thunder started well with captain Garvey and Alex Wollauz who scored 57 but no batsman after that would reach double figures and they ended up losing by 87 runs.

Match 3 was the final game of the day and Levante Lightning‘s first match. After an impressive start to the day against Hoboes, Bidborough who brought a very big squad made quite a few changes from match 1. Batting first, Bidborough did not go well and were all out for 114 in 15.2 overs following some exceptional bowling from the Lightning team. The hosts took 11.2 overs to reach the target and captain Shakeel made a sharp 53 in the process. Something for the visitors to remember however as during this innings, after not playing for a year, George Barret took a great hat trick with the ball. This lack of runs in this match and quick chase, could this be costly down the line?

Saturday was hot hot! Both blue skies and 30 degrees and some mesmerising cricket. Match four and first of the day was the local derby. Thunder against Lightning! With the Thunder put into bat, they struggled to get away the Lightning bowlers and finished all out with just 3 balls left of the innings and 138 runs on the board. 12.4 overs later, the game was over. Two wins from two for Lightning and no wins for Thunder meant they needed a strong performance in their 3rd and final match vs Bidborough.

Match 5, Bidborough won the toss and chose to bat. A solid performance with Eddie Grey the pick of the batsman with a classy 60. Needing 228 to win, the Thunder started well. Garvey and Wollauz again kept the score board moving and a good few batsman contributed with 20s and 30s, and all in double figures. Unfortunately none of the batsman could really pull away and although a much better performance, they fell short on 189 for 5. Thunder were out, Bidborough were well in it with 2 wins and waiting on the final match to see who would be in the final.

Match 6 and the final match of the round robin stage. Lightning were all but through, a solid net run rate was under their belt and aside from a total hammering, a place in the final was likely. Hoboes however had to win. If they did, with their previous performances, Bidborough who had beaten them on day 1 would be pushed to 3rd place. Hoboes CC won the toss and chose to bat. And bat they did, a destructive partnership of Julien Russell with 86 and Darren Eckford who ended up 100 not out with a 6 off the final ball of the innings to get his ton, saw the total fly to 277 for 6. In all this big hitting, Lightnings Faiz Bhat bowled an absurd spell of 4 overs, 3 wickets for just 19 runs, in such a match, this needed to be recognised. Lightning started steady but it was the entry of Tariq Iqbal that exploded Lightning into life, ending up with 108 in just 34 balls, the ground was mostly watching mouth open enormous 6’s, of length the ground hasn’t witnessed before. Unfortunately the finish line was just out of reach and the hosts finished on 266, just 11 short. This meant Levante Lightning finished top of the round robin league and Hoboes CC just finished second on net run rate ahead of a very unlucky Bidborough CC.

Finals day started with some drizzle. The 3rd place match was reduced as a result to 15 overs and a good fun match was attended by the whole Bidborough squad who was a great bunch of guys. They didn’t allow Levante Thunder a chance to take their first win of the tournament and officially took 3rd place with a 7 wicket win.

After the antics in the match the day before, the final was always going to be a little more tactical and both sides will have learnt a thing or two about their opposition. Hoboes CC won the toss and put Lightning into bat. After the very large number of wides the day before, Hoboes were on target and toppled the opening pair within the first couple of overs. Tariq Iqbal and Asad Raza (55 off 23) however kicked on and were looking in destructive form before a mix up saw Tariq run out. Wickets began to fall and a score of around 170 looked likely before Faiz Bhat stepped up for a cameo of 35 and pushed the score through to 202. Hoboes went in and after losing Fernandes early Lightning’s tails were up however this was all they really had to celebrate as Darren Eckford put on another great unbeaten innings of 76 not out and managed the chase perfectly, reaching the target and 203 in 18.2 overs.

Following the final 70 players and supporters enjoyed free-flowing drinks, tapas, paella, awards and presentations and plenty of laughs before the visiting teams embarked on their final night in Valencia. A massive thank you to the umpires Rico, Dave and George and also tournament referee John Howden from Cricket España who is a vital part of the tournament and cricket support in Valencia and across the country.

Finally to those at Levante CC who helped make this years Valencia Smash! such a memorable one, from help setting up each day, the Smash! music and more. And of course without the brilliant visitors from both Bidborough CC and Hoboes CC, it wouldn’t have been the same without you.

Valencia Smash! 2019 to support Chance to Shine once more

Cricket in Spain is very much an expat sport with many players from the teams here, including our own Levante CC, coming from the UK and many of the most popular cricketing nations. The development of the sport in Valencia and Spain as a whole is something Cricket España continue to strive towards in a very difficult climate and with amazing dedication, something Levante CC and Valencia Sports Tours admire. The Valencia Smash! T20 Tournament was launched in 2017 as an annual event that would look to attract teams from across Europe and beyond to Valencia for a 3 day tournament, alongside hosts and local side Levante CC. The idea was to not only offer excellent cricket for the hosts, but the chance to shine a bright light on cricket in the city and Spain as a whole, bringing the focus to a sport that needs local support and inclusion to see cricket become an option for young people and adults to be involved in over the years to come.

Click HERE for all the info on the Valencia Smash! 2019

So why is the Valencia Smash! and Valencia Sports Tours supporting a UK charity, Chance to Shine?

For the 2018 tournament we donated part of the individual player costs for the tournament to Chance to Shine. This is something we will repeat again in 2019. Chance to Shine is a charity that “aims to give all children the opportunity to play and learn through cricket”. Their work within schools and communities not only allows children to learn and enjoy the sport of cricket, but assists in personal, physical and social development. It is also a fantastic way to keep cricket alive and reach more and more young people in the UK, which is why Chance to Shine work with 39 county cricket boards across England and Wales.

Click HERE for all the info on the Valencia Smash! 2019

Without going into lots of detail about Chance to Shine and what they do (we recommend you visit their website by clicking on the Chance to Shine banner below to find out more as it is fantastic), their programmes alongside their values are areas we can learn a lot from here in Valencia and Spain. Learning from such a pioneering and forward thinking charity can only assist the development of our own structure and how we can bring cricket to people young and old everywhere. Without a charity leading the way in this area, although outside of the country we play cricket, the cricketing community would suffer greatly. Which is why we feel our support from Valencia is valuable in the long term to cricket worldwide. In addition, with Valencia Sports Tours a UK company too, we are fully aware and grateful to charities such as this, who do so much for young people, especially within inner cities who just don’t have many of the opportunities they fully deserve.

For the 2019 Valencia Smash! we have two teams confirmed alongside hosts Levante CC and just one more team is required to complete the line up meaning we are two thirds towards meeting our target donation to Chance to Shine for this year. If you think you and your club would like to take part in this great tournament in a wonderful city, please get in touch now!

Watch Barcelona vs Levante in Valencia this January – Incredible offer!!

Last night in the Estadi Ciutat de Valencia, Lionel Messi delivered a performance like I have never seen in that stadium or in person before. Barcelone won 5-0, putting to bed any hopes of the local Valencians that a dramatic 5-4 victory as was seen last season, would happen again.

With a hatrick and two assists, Messi was influential in all goals and aside from that was simply everywhere, controlling the game from start to finish. His assist for Suarez for the opener was sublime and it just went from there. For the neutral, this match must have been fantastic and although hard to watch at times as a Levante supporter, it was just a wonderful display of individual brilliance to watch, just as it would have been watching Maradona in Naples in years past.

On 10 JANUARY 2019, we go again. Levante have drawn Barcelona in the last 16 of the Copa Del Rey. Barcelona head back to Valencia for the first leg of the tie and we are offering a package that is just crazy value, but it is Christmas so what the heck!

FITC Football Academy visit Valencia

The Essex based football academy FITC visited Valencia in May with 12 players (and 12 parents) and three coaches including the head of the academy, Nicky Fitch. The plan was to take in the footballing sites of the city before enjoying a coaching session with local top flight side Levante UD, before a friendly match against the same clubs academy, a very exciting prospect for both FITC and Valencia Sports Tours alike as this was our first collaboration with Levante UD in this manner.

Day 1 – Arrival and the Mestalla

With FITC staying for two nights, every part of the trip was taken care of. After the coach collected the group from the airport and checked into the hotel, following a little refreshment, it was back on the coach and straight to Valencia CFs famous Mestalla Stadium for a tour. A club steeped in history, with players such as Kempes, Ayala, Silva, Villa and more adorning the walls, plus the chance to take in the changing rooms and of course go pitchside and sit in the dugouts, this was a great way to start the tour for everyone involved. With all the football activities on day two, it was now time to relax for the rest of the afternoon and evening. With the FITC hotel accommodation featuring a great pool on the roof and the famous Valencia blue skies prominent, most of the group spent the afternoon in or around the water, while others took to the Turia park and a visit into the old town area of El Carmen. A three course meal included at the hotel brought everyone together in the evening before the long day took its toll.

Day 2 – Levante UD

Valencia Sports Tours partnership with Levante UD allows teams to come to Valencia and train at their facilities just north of the city. Should the visiting sides be of a high standard, we are also able to offer friendly fixtures against the Levante academy sides, offering both parties the opportunity to test their metal against international opposition. This is what FITC came for and the day didn’t disappoint.

The day started with the short drive to Levante’s stadium (Estadi Ciutat de Valencia) where they were greeted by Ferdi, one of their coaches for the session later on but also the man who would take the group around the club’s stadium. Levante has a very different feel to Valencia, a smaller club without as many trophies but more than a match with their history. Taking the kids into the Levante family was the message and this led perfectly into the coaching session which took place at their Buñol training ground. Ferdi and two other coaches (including the club’s youth goalkeeping coach) took an hour and a half session with FITC, working through exercises which encompassed the clubs methodology. Thoroughly enjoyed by all, this led into lunch before Nicky and his two FITC coaches had the opportunity to sit with Pablo Rota, head of methodology at Levante UD, an opportunity that was gratefully received by Nicky and his team.

Following a break and lunch, it was onto the game. The U12 side from Essex started with real pressure, fully dominating the opening period they were able to take control of the game with two goals unanswered in the first half, although Levante showed glimpses of what they could offer. Following the break a hard-fought game saw the home side come back with two second half goals to draw level but it was FITC who seemed to finish the stronger but honours remained even at the final whistle.

The day finished around the dining table at the hotel, discussing the day that had passed. With the evening of free time the final part of the trip before the coach back to the airport in the morning of Day 3, the time seemed to have flown by. The players, parents and staff all returned to the UK with many memories and positive experiences to take home with them.

We can’t wait to see FITC again in the future and thanks to Nicky and Daniel at Levante UD for their commitment to making the tour a successful one.

Valencia CF and Levante UD La Liga Round Up

Valencia Mestalla

The weekend of 19 May saw two important events here in Valencia, my birthday and the final weekend of the La Liga season for our two local sides. Although in different halves of the table, both sides have achieved more than was expected of them, with both clubs and sets of fans very happy with the final positions.

Contact us now for information on 2018/19 packages for La Liga, Champions League and Copa Del Rey matches in Valencia

For Levante UD, after a stunning previous season that saw them walk the second division and secure promotion to the top flight, the prime target was stay in the league and not head straight back down. Levante started well with two wins and three draws in their first five matches (including a win against Villareal and draws away to Real Madrid and home to local rivals Valencia). However, things took a very sharp turn for the worse, with only one win from the end of September 2017 until the board sacked manager Muniz on 4 March 2018, the Granotas were in a very different position, precariously placed near the bottom of the table and a very bleak outlook. The board promoted reserve team coach and former Levante player Paco Lopez to take over until the end of the season. Although this temporary appointment didn’t fill Levante supporters with promise, it couldn’t have gone any better, in fact no one could quite believe the transformation. With a title chasing 25 points from an available 33, including a 5-4 home victory against Barcelona in the penultimate game of the season (the champions only defeat of an almost perfect season) Levante UD finished in a very respectable 15th, 17 points off the relegation zone and only 14 points away from a European spot. The club finished on a massive high and we hope they can take this into the new season.

Levante UD beat Barcelona 5-4 to stop their unbeaten season

Valencia CF were consistent from day one. With both Real and Athletico Madrid as opponents in their first 3 matches, drawing against both and winning their opener meant only Barcelona’s perfect start separating what would end up as the final top four teams. Valencia ran through until Xmas on good form with Real Madrid slipping up on several occasions, so by Xmas Eve, Valencia were just 2 points behind Athletico on 36 and 3 ahead of Real on 31. Form and morale was high and with Sevilla in 5th position with a very hit and miss type of season, it was Valencia’s champions league spot to lose.

2018 started well for Los Che, winning their first few matches and pulling away from a rocking Real Madrid side who drew to Celta Vigo and then lost at home to Villareal, before they undone all their hard work with a loss to Las Palmas, who would eventually be relegated. Then two further losses, a heavy 4-1 home defeat to Real followed by another to Athletico away the week after and the tables were finally turning. Would Valencia be able to rally and stay in contention? Yes they could! Back on track with wins against local rivals Levante and then bottom club Malaga saw them pick themselves up and move away from any challengers behind and well in contention for 3rd spot alongside Real Madrid, with Athletico Madrid the only side anywhere near Barcelona. The results kept coming, but with Real also moving at the same rate, Valencia ended up in a very strong 4th position on 73 points, some 12 points ahead of closest rivals Villareal and looking a completely different side to the one who finished 12th the previous year with just 46 points having suffered 18 losses. New manager Marcelino has done a fantastic job following on from ‘Caretaker’ manager Voro after he took the club through to the end of last season following a terrible period under Italian Prandelli.

So Valencia CF move into next season with Champions League football to look forward to and Levante UD looked every bit a decent side by the end of the season, with every chance of kicking on and shedding the yo-yo club moniker it has somewhat obtained from recent years. Moving into the 2018/19 season, there will more incredible matches like the 5-4 Levante win VS Barca, Real’s 4-1 win at the Mestalla, local derby matches, Copa Del Rey and Champions League to look forward to in Valencia. Make sure you take the opportunity to visit this wonderful city and experience the best sport in the world here too!
