On 13 October, London’s Linklaters travelled to Valencia to take on local cricket team Levante CC in a two match tour, plus plenty of time to take in the city and make the most of their time in Valencia.
Arriving on Thursday, Linklaters had organised with VST two matches, a T20 under the lights at Levante’s home ground, the VCG (or as officially known, Campo de Beisbol in the Turia), on Thursday evening and a limited over match during the day on Friday. With the team staying until late on Sunday, this also allowed them plenty of time to experience the city and all it has to offer.
Thursdays T20 saw Linklaters bat first after winning the toss. A new experience for the team from London, playing under the flood lights of the VCG, they worked the pink ball well and put on a respectable 152 from their 20 overs. This proved to be enough as Levante battled hard but after falling behind the run rate, their desperate attempts to claw back saw wickets fall and were all out for 123. A well fought contest was celebrated into the night, first at the ground where both sides enjoyed a beer or two before the touring side made their way into the old town to sample some of the local brew!
Friday morning saw a few sore heads but this wasn’t enough to dampen any of the cricket action with exceptional quality on show. Linklaters again batted first and after the best possible start from Levante CC with their first two balls of the innings from Orville Senhouse bowling both batsman, it took a sensational innings from Brannan of 161 to drive Linklaters to a cracking 40 over score of 304.
Knowing they had the batsmen to chase down this score, Levante set off in good form, keeping up with the run rate with opening batsman Tim Lucas cruising beautifully. Unfortunately, following a few wickets, the run rate began to get away from them before Barry Eaton joined Lucas at the crease and started a partnership that seemed to put the home side in the driving seat. On 97, Lucas was bowled trying to hit one to Barcelona and despite a valiant 84 from Eaton, Levante CC again fell just short of the chase with 278 from their 40 overs.
Following the match, both sides enjoyed tapas and Paella cooked outside at the ground under still glorious sunshine with plenty of well deserved cold beers. Both matches were close and played in great spirit and enjoyment.
With Friday night, Saturday and Sunday to enjoy, Linklaters had nights planned on both Friday and Saturday, taking in the vibrant nightlife Valencia offers, plus enjoyed a boat cruise on Saturday afternoon on the med, again under blue skies.
Many thanks to both sides for making this tour a great one!
